Can two parents who both need glasses correction have a child who does not need glasses?
Possible but not likely.

Can two parents who both do not need glasses have a child who needs glasses?
Yes. Unfortunately these kids sometimes miss out on how clearly they could be seeing because parents who do not have vision problems may assume their kids don’t have vision problems either.

Does a child who does not complain about their vision need an eye exam?
Yes. Vision changes are often gradual and a child may not know what they are visually missing. In addition, children can have medical eye problems. We recommend a comprehensive eye examination every 2 or 3 years even for children who do not need glasses.

Statistics show a surprisingly large number of Americans do not make use of the vision insurance benefits that they are entitled to. Some parents assume that schools or pediatricians would alert them if a full eye examination is needed. However, vision screenings can miss important eye problems. And, a child’s vision can change in a matter of months.

If you have vision insurance benefits, go ahead and have your child’s vision checked. And if you don’t, consider it one of your best investments in your child’s education. After all, about 80% of a child’s learning comes from the use of their vision.
